ATPRA Prerequisites

    The ATPRA is a two-day pool supervision and rescue award for aquatic therapists and support workers working during programmed activities. It is suitable for those working in a variety of pools, including where the water is deeper than your standing depth.

This qualification is endorsed by the Aquatic Therapy Association of Chartered Ph

    The ATPRA is a two-day pool supervision and rescue award for aquatic therapists and support workers working during programmed activities. It is suitable for those working in a variety of pools, including where the water is deeper than your standing depth.

This qualification is endorsed by the Aquatic Therapy Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (ATACP).


The ATPRA LIGHT is a one-day award suitable for when the facility has staff qualified as lifeguards or first aiders that are available to respond quickly to you in the event of an emergency.

The ATPRA course is open to anyone who is 16 years of age or older at the date of assessment and be able to:

  • Must be 16 years of age at the date of assessment
  • Be able to meet the following criteria prior to the course:
    • Regain their footing from a face-down and face-up floating position
    • Surface dive to the deepest part of the pool
    • Climb out wit

The ATPRA course is open to anyone who is 16 years of age or older at the date of assessment and be able to:

  • Must be 16 years of age at the date of assessment
  • Be able to meet the following criteria prior to the course:
    • Regain their footing from a face-down and face-up floating position
    • Surface dive to the deepest part of the pool
    • Climb out without help and without using steps or ladders (where venue design permits)
  • Must complete minimum guided learning hours
  • Successfully complete the course assessment

  To achieve the ATPRA certificate, candidates must pass a formal assessment at the end of the course, where trainees demonstrate the skills and knowledge learned in the form of a theory and practical assessment.

Alternatively, we can run the course for you at one of our partner swimming pools in Edinburgh.
